South Loop Neighbors Photo Show

Work on display at Dearborn Station until August 31st

Posted Aug 16, 2008

Last night the South Loop Neighbors met at the Chicago Community Bank in Dearborn Station. The 9th annual "Living History" photo contest is meant to highlight the aspects that make the South Loop a great Chicago Neighborhood. Nearly 100 people packed together in the small bank to see 24 images - all submitted by local photographers. Of the 3 pieces I submitted, South View earned an 'honorable mention' and a $50 prize.

If you get the chance, stop in Dearborn Station and walk to the back of the building. All of the finalists work will be up until August 31st and there's talk of extending the showing at another location. If so, I'll post an update.

Thanks again South Loop Neighbors!

South View & North View

Naturally opposing forces, nature's strength and our growth as a people. These images were taken from the roof of the Folio Square building. I live in this building and it was here where I quit my job to begin a career as an artist and urban documentarian. These were my views then and incidentally, the first two photos of my career. I feel like they captured a tension I held at the time - hope through the inevitable changes to come. They were an introduction to the South Loop.
South Loop

This image was commissioned by my neighbors in March of this year. They were moving and wanted a personal way to take the South Loop with them. We agreed that a fitting portrait would include both their home and their neighborhood. My solution was to build a panorama with our home (Folio Square) situated font and center. Beyond it, the South Loop dissolves into the western plains, northern skyscrapers and the lake. As heavy construction continues, the border between the Loop and South Loop becomes more blurred. I hope my take on the neighborhood pays respect to the past while welcoming the future.
